About Dragon Smoke
Smoke takes jamming to the next level with Eric Lindell on vocals and guitar, Ivan Neville on vocals and keyboard, Stanton
Moore on drums, and Robert Mercurio on bass. Dragon Smoke would be born from the phenomenon known as "Superjam." "Superjam"
is a hallowed tradition of the one-and-only New Orleans Jazz Festival, and entails bringing together a roster of high caliber
musicians who would not usually perform together, mixing the diverse styles in the crucible of a jam, and serving up hot fresh
music that's never been heard before. When Lindell and Neville were matched up with the so-called Galactic rhythm section
of Mercurio and Moore, it was truly magical. The unlikely quartet quickly realized the potential of their brand-new sound
and have been playing at every New Orleans Jazz Festival since it began in 2003. The band would take their name from the renowned
Dragon's Den venue, a miniature bar in New Orleans with a capacity of just one hundred people, where they played together
for the first time.
So what exactly is this mysterious Dragon Smoke sound? It involves a heady mixture of blue eyed
soul from Lindell, R&B and funk from Neville, and the smooth grooves of the Galactic duo. The band typically rehearses
six or seven songs for a performance to familiarize themselves with the structure, and then on stage will play around and
improvise with the set. This band spends the majority of their time in New Orleans, but will occasionally make a trek along
West Coast. Bear in mind that Lindell, Neville, Moore, and Mercurio are established musicians in their own right, so a Dragon
Smoke jam is not exactly a commonplace occurrence. When they do manage to come together, however, it is more than evident
that these lads are having the time of their life. With their natural camaraderie and rapport, an audience member unfamiliar
with the band would almost certainly assume that these four maestros have been jamming together forever.
have their eyes on the future, and are aiming to release their debut album and extend their regular touring schedule to include
more locations outside of the Bay Area and New Orleans. So keep your eyes peeled for Dragon Smoke, who always brings the fire!
Dragon Smoke would be a hit from day one. Their first performance in New Orleans' Dragon's Den
with an audience of one hundred was such a smashing success that the four musicians immediately decided to come together again
the next year. With their growing fan base, the quartet is preparing for their first album release and an expanded tour schedule
that will doubtless garner them even more acclaim.
The fiery combination that is Dragon Smoke is
the brainchild of Bay Area and New Orleans promoter Alex Andreas. Andreas, according to bassist Mercurio, has a natural talent
for bringing together unexpected combinations of musicians, thanks to his innate sense of interpersonal chemistry.
