Drake Bulldogs Basketball History
The Drake Bulldogs basketball program
has been the talk of Des Moines, Iowa since it first began back in 1906. They enjoyed a period of dominance in the 1930's
and again in the late Sixties and early Seventies. The past few seasons have been rough for the Bulldogs as they have struggled
to make their way back to the Tournament following their most recent conference tournament win in 2008. Things are on an upswing
for the Bulldogs under head coach Ray Giacoletti and they appear poised to make a big move up the Missouri Valley Conference
standings in the 2014-2015 season.
Drake Bulldogs Basketball Conference
The Missouri Valley Conference
may often be called a "mid-major" by sports pundits but this Division I conference is not one to be overlooked. Founded in
1907, the Missouri Valley conference is the second oldest athletic conference in the United States and younger than only the
Big Ten. There are currently ten schools who make up the Missouri Valley Conference: Drake, Bradley, University of Evansville,
Indiana State, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, University of Northern Iowa,Missouri State University, Wichita State, and Southern
Illinois University. Every year the members of the Missouri Valley Conference play each another in the Missouri Valley Conference
Tournament which is held in St. Louis, Missouri and has earned the nickname Arch Madness, with the winner earning an automatic
bid in the NCAA Tournament. In the past few seasons Wichita State has dominated the conference in basketball and made a name
for itself in the national rankings, reaching number 2 in the 2013-2014 season as it went 34-0 before entering the Big Dance
and making it to the Final Four at the end of the 2012-2013 season before losing a close game to eventual champions Louisville.
Attending a top college basketball game is one of the best experiences to be found in sports.
Many of the best student athletes in the world take the court in college basketball, when this is combined with some of the
most passionate fans in all of sports there is an atmosphere in the arena that cannot be found anywhere else. When you set
foot in the Drake Knapp Center for a Drake Bulldogs home basketball game this will all be clear. As the teams set up for opening
jump ball the fans get on their feet and loudly cheer for their alma mater and hometown favorites. The game continues full
of end to end action, big time shots, and clutch defensive stops. All of a sudden the clock is winding down in the second
half and the two sides are wrapped up in yet another tight contest. Your palms get sweaty with each trip down the floor and
each time a player from your favorite team lets loose a shot you hold your breath until the ball tickles the twine. This continues
until the final buzzer when the Bulldogs' side erupts after another big win and their fans exit of the arena in jubilation.
The moment you leave the Drake Knapp Center you will want to immediately start planning your next trip to the venue to cheer
on the Bulldogs.
The Drake Bulldogs have earned an NCAA Tournament berth four times, most recently
in 2008. The program is perhaps most famous for its 1969 team which made it all the way to the Final Four.
