About the Dropkick Murphys
any band that has survived the test of time, the Dropkick Murphys have had a long and tumultuous road that eventually lead
to their success as the most influential Celtic punk band in existence today. Their humble origins start in Quincy, Massachusetts,
where Mike McColgan, Ken Casey, Rick Barton, and Jeff Erna came together and started blowing up local music venues around
Massachusetts. One of their earliest successes would be touring alongside punk ska idols the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, which
would eventually lead them to signing with their first major record label.
The band would lose lead singer McColgan,
but bounce back with new singer Al Barr who would keep the Dropkick charge going strong. The band continued to put out new
content, as well as various homages to parallel punk and ska bands through a full cover album. By 2001 the band went through
various lineup changes, but their material at the time had lost none of the vitality that had become a signature piece of
the Dropkick Murphys' sound.
The band's signature style soon became synonymous with Boston music and the greater punk
movement, and the Dropkick Murphys would be showcased across various entertainment medias. They were featured in the groundbreaking
Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game series, in cinema in the major film Fever Pitch featuring Jimmy Fallon, in Martin Scorsese's
epic gangster film The Departed, and in the politically charged compilation album Rock Against Bush, with songs aimed at criticizing
then US president George Bush.
While the band had been a local success and certainly a success within the punk genre,
it wasn't until 2007 that the Dropkick Murphys made a major dent in national music charts. The single "The State of Massachusetts"
would make Rolling Stone's Top 100 songs list, and at this point the band became an irreplaceable part of the fabric of Boston
culture. Their works would continue to receive critical acclaim and attention through various media outlets, including in
various television shows, movies, and as anthems for professional sports teams. With eight full length albums out and no sign
of stopping, the Dropkick Murphys are a testament to the longevity and solid foundations of the punk rock movement across
the United States.
The band's most frenetic releases were their earliest, which included
Do or Die and The Gang's All Here. The latter would feature the Murphys first time hitting the charts, but certainly wouldn't
be their last. The singles from that era, "Cure of a Fallen Soul" and "10 Years of Service" remain the quintessential examples
of the Murphys at their rawest.
2005's The Warrior's Code would have a formidable showing across multiple spots on the
Billboard, including hitting the #48 in the US charts and #33 in Sweden. The singles from the album, "Sunshine Highway", "The
Warrior's Code", and "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" would enjoy extended radio play and popularity, with "I'm Shipping Up To
Boston" becoming one of the band's most memorable hits to date. 2011's Going Out in Style is the Murphys' biggest hit yet,
with the album hitting the #6 spot in the charts and spawning a multitude of memorable singles including "Going Out in Style"
and "Sunday Hardcore Matinee".
