About Duran Duran

In 1978, the English rock band, Duran Duran, formed in the city of Birmingham. Nick Rhodes and John Taylor, who later included Roger Taylor, initially formed the group. After changes in the line up, the band included Andy Taylor and Simon Le Bon, along with Nick Rhodes and John Taylor. Over the years, other members included: Stephen Duffy, Simon Colley, Andy Wickett, Alan Curtis, Jeff Thomas, Warren Cuccurullo and Sterling Campbell. Duran Duran became one of the most impacting and successful bands during the 1980s. The band was a key mover and shaker in what has been coined as the "Second British Invasion" that penetrated the United States. This time, it was through the music videos of MTV.

Duran Duran had great success being a part of what was considered the "New Romantic" scene, as they played in the company of bands like Spandau Ballet, Visage, Boy George. As Duran Duran built a larger fan base and became a significant part of the global music scene and its accompanying culture, the band started to build relationships with fashion designers to hone a particular style and brand that played a relatively significant role in the music video-trailblazers from England. Aesthetics was always an important aspect of Duran Duran and to the individual members. Some of the fashion designers who were interested in working with Duran Duran included: Kah & Bell and Anthony Price, as well as the stylist Perry Haines. They continued to work with fashion designers during their career. In later years, the band worked with Vivienne Westwood and Giorgio Armani.

It was not simply in fashion that the visual was important, Duran Duran worked with a select number of graphic designers to create its album covers and the like. One of those designers includes Malcolm Garrett. In an article with GQ magazine, Nick Rhodes recalls having worked with photographer Rebecca Blake in the mid eighties, "She for some reason always had the most ambitious or difficult visions. One time she decided she'd take the photo of us five Duran Duran guys with a snake. And the guy arrived, and I thought, 'This is going to be some little snake, surely?' no, it's some great, big python and it comes in a sack. With a guy with a stick […] It had to be wrapped around all of us and Simon had to hold the snake at the front and it was quite trick—and I seem to remember Andy, our guitarist, being in a particular difficult mood that day too." The snake was a much different experience for Nick Rhodes, who would prefer don a beautifully cut suit that features great tailoring.

Duran Duran Breakthrough

Initially, the band started playing gigs in and around Birmingham, England just before the 1980s hit. It was popular in Birmingham and became a resident band at the Rum Runner, where both John Taylor and Nick Rhodes worked as a doorman and deejay. In many ways, the regular spot at the Rum Runner gave the band ample opportunity to practice at a proper venue. Interestingly, the band was named after a character from the French film, Barbarella by Roger Vadim. The film was also the name of a venue that hosted bands like the Clash and the Sex Pistols and was nearby the Rum Runner. Duran Duran has had a significant number of Top 10 singles in the United Kingdom and on the Billboard 100. According to the Sunday Mercury, Duran Duran has sold more than 100 million records. Duran Duran has received a number of awards and accolades over the past three decades. The band has won two Grammy Awards and two Brit Awards, in addition to an Music Television Video Music Award for Lifetime Achievement. Duran Duran even has been awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Over the years, Duran Duran has been on a number of record labels that include: Capitol, EMI, Parlophone, Virgin, Epic, Hollywood and Tapemodern. Duran Duran, perhaps having a deejay past, was one of the first bands to start remixing its songs. Duran Duran remixed its songs by creating multiple layered arrangements of the singles and even recording different versions of the songs in the studio. These remixes were referred to as the "night hits" and were offered on vinyl, singles and on 12-inch club singles.

Duran Duran Trivia

The band Duran Duran teamed up with filmmaker David Lynch (best known for the television series Twin Peaks and a number of films like Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire. On September 10th Duran Duran Unstaged by David Lynch will be shown for one night only. This film is not like most concert documentaries. It is considered a "dream collaboration that presents the band's energy and Lynch's playful interventions on the grand scale they so uniquely merit." During the film, Duran Duran performs eighteen of its songs that include: "Hungry Like the Wolf," "A View to Kill," "Ordinary World" and "Rio." There are also appearances by Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance, Beth Ditto, Mark Ronson and Kelis of The Gossip. Duran Duran has been in the studio working on what will be its 14th album with the hopes of going on tour to support it in 2014.

Over the years, Duran Duran has received some flak for the nature of its music videos that included what some deem as sexualized women. While the content of the videos were questionable to some during the 1980s, Duran Duran was one of the first band's to have a professional director shoot the band's music video with 35 mm movie camera. In many ways, they were early adopters and innovators of new technology for what was even a newer medium for music.
