East Carolina Pirates Football History
The East Carolina Pirates first took
to the field back in 1932 and have been competing at the highest level for many years. The Pirates always recruit well and
seem to have some great players each and every season. The Pirates moved into Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in 1963 and have called
that venue home ever since then. The stadium has been expanded upon and now can seat up to 50,000 people. The Pirates began
their history as an independent team before joining the North State Conference in 1947. They spent a few years in the 1960s
as an independent again before joining the Southern Conference in 1965. In 1977 they began their third stint as an independent
program before joining Conference USA in 1997, where they resided until 2014 when they became a member of the American Athletic
Conference. East Carolina has had some great teams over the years, and the program has been consistent enough to post a winning
record throughout school history.
The team has made it to a bowl game on 18 occasions, winning eight of those contests.
