About Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran was introduced to music at a very young age, as he sang in his church choir starting
at age four, and also took up the guitar. He started writing songs while attending high school, and he was accepted at the
National Youth Theatre when he was a teen. Ed Sheeran began recording music in 2005, releasing his first EP, The Orange Room.
Following a move to London to pursue music, he started playing in local venues. Sheeran released another EP in 2009, called
You Need Me, and he followed up with his Loose Change EP, which produced a track that would later become his smash hit, "The
A Team." By April 2010, Sheeran had moved to Los Angeles and continued to play at open mic nights and small venues. Actor
Jamie Foxx was impressed after seeing him at The Foxxhole, and he ended up offering him the use of his recording studio and
his home in Hollywood. During the rest of the year, Sheeran continued to grow his YouTube fan base and by early 2011, he was
poised to become a breakout star.
In January 2011, Sheeran's independent EP, No. 5 Collaborations Project, reached number
2 on the iTunes chart. This was quite an impressive feat, considering he had no marketing team or promotion at the time. By
the end of the month, he was signed to Asylum/Atlantic Records. His debut album "+" was released on September 12, 2011, and
sold 102,000 copies in just its first week. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, and later became the best-selling
debut album of 2011 in the United Kingdom. Ed Sheeran went on to win two BRIT Awards for British Breakthrough Act and British
Solo Male Artist. He was also nominated for Best British Single and British Album of the Year.
After the massive success
of his debut album, Sheeran lent his songwriting talents to the boy band One Direction, by co-writing their debut album. He
was later contacted by Taylor Swift, who had heard his music while touring in Australia. Sheeran co-wrote her single "Everything
Has Changed," for her album Red. Sheeran was proving to be a formidable talent, as Red became the biggest-selling new album
of 2012, and was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Sheeran also went on to write more songs for One
Direction, notably "Little Things," which became their second number 1 hit in the United Kingdom.
Ed Sheeran got his big break after being seen by Jamie Foxx at The Foxxhole in Los Angeles. With
Jamie Foxx's generosity, Sheeran was able to hone his recording and song writing talents, and later released his phenomenally
successful debut album. The album has been certified quintuple platinum by the British Phonographic Industry, and it has managed
to hit the top ten on various music charts around the world, including the Swiss Albums Chart, New Zealand Albums Chart, Irish
Albums Chart, Dutch Albums Chart, Flanders Belgian Albums Chart, and the Australian Albums Chart. He was later nominated for
a few Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year for "The A Team," Best New Artist, and Album of the Year for Red. He also
won an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "The A Team."
