Edmonton Oilers History

The Edmonton Oilers are one of the most storied franchises in the NHL, and first formed in 1972 as the Alberta Oilers, one of the founding members of the World Hockey Association. In 1979 the Oilers joined the NHL when it merged with the WHA. The Oilers have been an Edmonton favorite for a long time, with the team's roots dating back to the early 1970s. The franchise has had plenty of Stanley Cups under its belt, including five in seven years in the Eighties, marking one of the most dominant stretches in NHL history thanks to plenty of great players, including Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky. The Oilers have been struggling a bit in recent years but have done a great job in the draft, acquiring a core of young talent that will provide a bright future for the team. Additionally, the city of Edmonton voted in early 2013 to build anew 480 million dollar arena in downtown Edmonton to revitalize the area as well as assure that the Oilers do not move away from Edmonton. This year's Oilers squad is ready to prove that they are on their way to a return to form.

About the Team

The Edmonton Oilers currently sit in seventh place in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference, but are looking to make a move up the division standings as the regular season draws to a close. Left winger Taylor Hall leads the team in points and assists while David Perron is setting the pace with goals scored. This young offensive core is not only giving fans plenty to cheer about this season, but also hope that the future is indeed bright for the Edmonton Oilers and that they will be contenders in the years to come. Rexall Place tickets are always hot commodities for a reason, and it definitely isn't because there is a lack of excitement from game to game. But even though regular season match-ups are always a must for true fans, there is nothing close to being there in the playoffs when the Oilers take to the ice with hopes of bringing their fans an intense postseason win. Be there for all of the highlight-reel saves, spectacular net-ripping goals and big hits that will have you jumping out of your seat in no time. Don't miss out!

The Experience

Hockey fans in general are some of the most passionate sports fans around, but nothing quite matches the fanaticism surrounding the NHL playoffs and fans of the Edmonton Oilers are some of the most dedicated and vociferous fans in the entire NHL. On game day at Rexall Place the fans file in and take their seats and that is when the cheering and chanting begins. As the clock winds down closer and closer to the dropping of the puck the crowd works itself into a frenzy. Finally both teams are ready for face off and the excitement really begins. Thunderous, bone rattling hits, incredible displays of speed and agility, powerful slapshots, and tremendous saves set the arena on fire for the following three periods of world class college hockey. By the time the final buzzer sounds your voice is hoarse and your palms are stinging from clapping and giving high fives and you will already be planning a return trip. Everything is ratcheted up a notch during the NHL playoffs and the further teams advance the more intense the competition becomes. If you thought regular season NHL games were exciting, just wait until you experience an NHL playoff game live and in person.

NHL Western Conference Pacific Division

The Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the NHL is made up of seven teams: the Anaheim Ducks, the Calgary Flames, the Edmonton Oilers, the Los Angeles Kings, the Phoenix Coyotes, the San Jose Sharks, and the Vancouver Canucks. The Pacific Division was formed in 1993 and is currently the only division in the NHL without an Original Six team. The most recent Stanley Cup Champion to come out of the division is the Los Angeles Kings who won it in 2012. Three other Pacific Division teams have won the championship: the 1995-1996 Colorado Avalanche, the 1998-1999 Dallas Stars (who are no longer in the division), and the 2006-2007 Anaheim Ducks. There are several intense rivalries in the Pacific Division which means that every division game is going to be hotly contested. Teams from the Pacific Division are regularly among the best in the Western Conference and are typically serious contenders for a Stanley Cup Championship.

A hockey fan could not ask for more historic names atop the all time leaders for the Edmonton Oilers. Wayne Gretzky is the franchise's all time points leader, goals leader, and assists leader and is followed in most categories by the likes of Mark Messier and Jari Kurri. Wayne Gretzky also holds the franchise record for most goals in a season, most points in a season, and most assists in a season.
