Elton John Background

Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, Elton John excelled in music from a very young age, teaching himself to play piano when he was four years old, and at only 11 years old, he attended the esteemed Royal Academy of Music in London on a scholarship. Despite his father's wishes, he followed his passion to become a pop star and dropped out of school at 17. He joined a group coined Bluesology andextracted his stage name from the names of two other members of the band.

It was in 1967 when John responded to an ad for a songwriter for Liberty Records. He got the job and collaborated with Bernie Taupin, musical wordsmith. The pair switched to the DJM label and soon started penning songs for other artists. John's initial break as a singer came with his 1969 Empty Sky album. While that one didn't spark any buzz, his 1970 self-titled album did. No. 1 hit smashes Your Song, Crocodile Rock, Bennie and the Jets and Island Girl further validated John's talent as a singer.

While John wasn't cranking out smash hits in the '80s, he still managed to make a dent on the charts with memorable tunes like Empty Garden (Hey, Hey Johnny) and Little Jeannie. The '90s brought Can You Feel The Love Tonight, which earned John his first Academy Award triumph. The song was used on the soundtrack for The Lion King (1994). Also around this time, John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

John and lyricist Tim Rice later scored a Tony Award for Best Original Score for their hit musical, Aida, in 2000. John continued to record original music throughout the 2000s. The Captain & the Kid arrived in 2006 and collaborated with Leon Russell on The Union in 2010. The Diving Board came out in 2013, serving as his 30th studio album developed by T Bone Burnett.

Four decades later, Elton John is still reeling out the hits! He entertains audiences all over the planet and even performed at a party for Queen Elizabeth with Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Ozzy Osbourne. Elton John Trivia

While Elton John has certainly toned down the pageantry of his stage shows, he has still sustained his popularity as a live act. He plays numerous concert dates annually as a solo act and with other musicians, like Leon Russell. His collaboration with Russell led to a joint tour.

Currently, John holds the record for the second best-selling single of all time. The song, which you've probably guessed, is 1997's Candle in the Wind, which he dedicated to the late Princess Diana.

Elton John Concert Experience

Much of Elton John's fame was rooted in his famous live shows! An interview with W revealed why he chose the digs he did; he said, "I wasn't a sex symbol like Bowie, Marc Bolan or Freddie Mercury, so I dressed on the humorous side, because if I was going to be stuck at the piano for two hours, I was going to make people look at me." His surreal, exuberant style won over legions of rock and pop fans, and is still cited by artists like Gaga as a major influence on their work.
