Elton John Background

Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Middlesex, England, Elton John fell in love with music at an early age. By the time he was three years old, he was already playing the piano, the basics of which he taught himself by listening to music and breaking it down by ear. When he was seven, he started taking formal piano lessons, and his music teachers couldn't help but be impressed with his incredible talent. A few years later, at the age of 11, Elton John won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he wowed his professors with his unbelievable ability to replay songs impeccably by memory after hearing them just once.

When he was 15, young and talented Reginald Dwight started playing piano at a local pub on the weekends. He earned a modest amount of money and a fantastic reputation among the pub's regular clientele. In 1964, he and a few of his friends formed their own band, which they called Bluesology. They became such a successful group that within a few years of their formation, they were opening for major touring artists like Patti LaBelle, Doris Troy, Billy Stewart, The Isley Brothers, and Major Lance.

Shortly after, Elton John and his writing partner, Bernie Taupin, were hired by Dick James's DJM Records as staff songwriters, and they spent two years churning out material for numerous artists. After a while, they decided that they should start writing songs for John to sing, not just for other artists. So Taupin and John got to work and in 1968, Elton John released his first single, "I've Been Loving You". Gradually, Elton John started to be a recognizable name in the music industry. He and Taupin kept cranking out phenomenal songs, and Elton John secured his position as a solo artist. To this day, Bernie Taupin and Elton John still collaborate on songs. They have worked on over 30 albums together, and their incredible songwriting partnership has produced millions of record sales all over the world. Over the course of his career, Elton John has accrued numerous awards and accolades, such as an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an induction into the Songwriter Hall of Fame, an Academy Award, six Grammy Awards, five Brit awards, a Tony award, and even a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for his "services to music".
