BornReginald Kenneth Dwight, Elton John excelled in music from a very young age, teaching himself to play piano when he was four years old, and at only 11 years old, he attended the esteemed Royal Academy of Music in London on a scholarship. Despite his father's wishes, he followed his passion to become a pop star and dropped out of school at 17. He joined a group coined Bluesology and extracted his stage name from the names of two other members of the band. It was in 1967 when John responded to an ad for a songwriter for Liberty Records. He got the job and collaborated with Bernie Taupin, musical wordsmith. The pair switched to the DJM label and soon started penning songs for other artists. John's initial break as a singer came with his 1969 Empty Sky album. While that one didn't spark any buzz, his 1970 self-titled album did. No. 1 hit smashes Your Song, Crocodile Rock, Bennie and the Jets and Island Girl further validated John's talent as a singer. Four decades later, Elton John is still reeling out the hits!
