Eluveitie are a curious find in the metal world. The Swiss band didn't form solely to bust your eardrums - though they do that on many of their albums. But they also formed to explore the traditional folk sounds from the region of Gaul, even incorporating the extinct Gaulish language into their lyrics. Knowing your roots is an important quality in music, and Eluveitie has studied well. The band formed in 2002, and has always had a passion for pagan folk sounds. Listening through their catalog is a bit like taking a trip back in time, hearing rock if it existed back in the Dark Ages - or before. In 2009, they released Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion, an acoustic-based album that has been cited as a great example of pagan, folk-metal.
If you're a hardcore metal fan, you should be able to find plenty to like in Eluveitie's 2010 album,...As It Never Was. It's a tight turn from the softer sounds on Evocation I: The Arcane Dominion. That means they're going from full-medieval mode to a plugged-in, electric rocker of an album. If you loved their medieval and Celtic folk rock, though, don't fret - there are still plenty of pipes and traditional instruments on this album, too.
