Emancipator Background

Born Doug Appling, the Emancipator started playing the violin at the tender age of four. From there, he taught himself how to play guitar.

And in high school when he was 15, he received a copy of Acid Pro from a friend. After listening to a number of different electronic artists, he decided to give it a go himself and recorded some rock tunes on a four-track recorder.

Inspired by Thievery Corporation, RJD2 and DJ Shadow, Emancipator has been crafting his own signature brand of chill-out tunes since the mid-2000s, when his debut album Soon It Will Be Cold Enough dropped. He was just 19 years old.

His authentic brand of music has mesmerized fans in cyberspace and around the world. Japanese producer Nujabes ran with Soon It Will Be Cold Enough in Japan and unloaded 5,000 copies of it in the first six months.

The Emancipator first toured the U.S. in July 2009. He takes a raw approach to electronic production by mixing in an array of choir music, string instruments and world music beats. Appling said his approach is influenced by a sole loop or sound, and he intensifies the music by adding layers and undertones to generate "an ambiance... that is inspired by the natural world."

Since then, Emancipator has been increasingly popular with electronica and folk music fans, and he only continues to rise on the mainstream music scene.

Emancipator Hit Albums
