Emmylou Harris Background
Country singer, songwriter and musician Emmylou Harris was born in 1947
in Birmingham, Alabama. Raised as a military brat, Harris' family moved around a lot. Most of her childhood was spent in North
Carolina, but she went to high school in Woodbridge, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C.
She studied drama in
college at the University of North Carolina, before exiting and relocating to the Big Apple to chase her dreams of becoming
Harris managed to find an outlet for her folk and country music in Greenwich Village coffeehouses and clubs.
And she also waitressed on the side.
Harris cut her first album, Gliding Bird (1970), with Jubilee record label. Unfortunately,
the label folded shortly after Gliding Bird was issued. Later that year, Harris and her husband, songwriter Tom Slocum, relocated
to Nashville to test the waters on the country music scene. Their marriage didn't work out, and Harris ended up going back
to her parents' farm outside of D.C.
Not to be discouraged, Harris picked up her guitar and continued singing. Surprisingly,
the D.C. area was very receptive to folk, bluegrass and country music at the time. Harris played with a trio at local watering
holes and was introduced to members of the Flying Burrito Brothers. Through them, she met ex-bandleader Gram Parsons. Parsons
was looking for a female vocalist to harmonize with him on his premiere solo project, GP (1972).
Parsons took Harris
under his wing. She learned a lot from his trailblazing country-rock fusion style. She also tagged along on Parson's tour
with his backup, the Fallen Angels. In 1973, she stepped in the studio with him again to cut Grievous Angel. Sadly, Parsons
died from a heart attack in September 1973.
After the passing of her mentor, Harris established her own band, the Angel
Band, and inked a deal with Warner Bros./Reprise Records.
Her first major label debut, Pieces of the Sky, arrived in
1975. It contained a dynamic collection of cover songs from talents ranging from The Beatles to Merle Haggard. It also generated
the Top 5 hit, If I Could Only Win Your Love - a Louivin Brothers song.
Her sophomore effort, Elite Hotel (1976), was
anchored by the top-slot hits, Sweet Dreams and Together Again. She claimed a Grammy Award for Best Country Female Vocal Performance
for the album, which served as a milestone for Harris' career breakthrough.
She would go on to collaborate with some
of the biggest names of the '60 and '70s as the scene took off and grew, as well as issuing nearly two dozen records of her
own unique music.
