En Vogue Background
and Thomas McElroy conceived the idea of the female vocal quartet, En Vogue. The former members of Club Nouveau wanted to
create a group who could radiate sultriness along with vocal proficiency. And as producers, they wanted material that would
meld R&B and girl group traditions with new jack swing rhythms and hip-hop. Mission accomplished! Originally dubbed For
You, En Vogue was comprised of former Miss Black California, Cindy Herron, along with Dawn Robinson, Maxine Jones and Terry
Ellis. En Vogue debuted with 1990′s Born to Sing album, which contained Hold On, a pop crossover smash which landed
at No. 2 and drove the album to go platinum.
The group was often likened to the Supremes, even though En Vogue's members
shared lead vocals and puposely strayed away from designating a "star" singer.
En Vogue eclipsed the music scene in
1992 with Funky Divas, which cultivated tremendous commercial and critical responses. The album hosted a wide range of genres
from R&B to pop to rap to rock to reggae. The album garnered multi-platinum certification along with Top 10 placement.
And in 1993, they were back in the spotlight again backing Salt-N-Pepa on their hit "Whatta Man".
Robinson exited the
group when En Vogue was cutting their third album. But before that record was released, En Vogue had contributed Don't Let
Go (Love) to the Set It Off soundtrack. The hit fared well on the charts, landing at No. 2 in 1997. EV3 arrived six months
Over the next few years, the divas released The Best of En Vogue (1999) and Masterpiece Theater (2000).
2001, the band experienced personnel changes again with Maxine Jones leaving the band. Amanda Cole was added as well. Back
as a trio, the group resumed touring and issued their sophomore compilation album, The Very Best of En Vogue.

In 2003, Amanda Cole exited the group, and despite efforts to get Robinson and Jones to come back, they
didn't return to the group. But in September of that year, the group came out of nowhere to do a European tour.
