The Epicentre has drawn a large and eclectic group of music fans largely because it’s one of the few venues in northern San Diego to offer a performance space for indie-rock, punk and emo bands. It’s located in a park across from Mira Mesa High School. The crowds tend to be very young and filled with enthusiasm. The 5,600 square foot facility has a teen-run café and room for up to 525 people.
The Epicentre’s history began in 1992, when the facility was a public library. The library moved about a block away, and teens advocated for a music venue and hangout. A door-to-door donation campaign helped pay for the facility, which includes a recording studio and record store. The facility also offers music-related classes to local teens.
