About Essence Music Festival

The original Essence Music Festival was intended to be a one-time event to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Essence Magazine; however, the success of the event led to it becoming an annual happening in New Orleans. Although, following the devastation that took play in 2006 due to Hurricane Katrina. During that time, much of New Orleans was destroyed and families relocated to various locations with Houston being one of them. Instead of taking a year off, the Essence Music Festival decided to have the event in Houston, Texas. The event that is happening in 2014 is expected to be one of the best, as it is the festival's 20th anniversary. There are a number of well-known artists that will be entertaining crowds across the five stages of the festival. The layout of the event is designed to have one main stage that invites the top-billed headliners. The other four stages are meant for the outstanding supporting bands that are lined up this year. The big name that will star on the main stage is the one-and-only Prince who will play on Independence Day. Prince will be playing to support the Rebuild the Dream Innovation Fund that promotes awareness and education of disadvantaged youth to learn the languages of computer programming and coding. Prince is a singer-songwriter who is also a gifted multi-instrumentalist. His career includes 10 platinum albums and 30 Top 40 singles. The main stage lineup also includes: Nas, Janelle Monae, Nile Rodgers, Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, The Roots, Ledisi, Tank Lionel Richie, Charlie Wilson, Erykah Badu, Jazmine Sullivan, Jesse Boykins III, K. Michelle, Tamar Braxton and Trey Songz. It genuinely is one top-notch main stage line up and the other stages will not disappoint either.
