About Evita Miami
is the award-winning musical that follows the rags-to-riches rise of one of the most powerful Latin American women in history.
With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, this amazing tale focuses on the life of the Argentinian political
leader Eva Duarte and her role as First Lady after marrying Juan Peron. Eva Peron became a champion of the poor and has been
regarded as a hero for her philanthropic efforts and charity work.
This moving musical began as a rock opera concept
album by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice in 1976, and eventually became a successful musical production. Evita made its debut
in London's West End in 1978 at the Prince Edward Theater, and closed in 1986 after a whopping 3,176 performances. The original
cast included Elaine Paige playing Eva, David Essex playing Che, and Joss Ackland as Peron. The show debuted to supportive
reviews, with fans and critics being enchanted by the meteoric rise of Evita and the touching performances by the cast. The
West End production won a number of awards, including The Society of West End Theater award for Musical of the Year, and actress
Elaine Paige won Performance of the Year in a Musical.
Evita went on to make its official Broadway debut at the Broadway
Theatre in September of 1979, and closed in 1983 after 1,567 performances. Legendary actress Patti LuPone played the role
of Eva, with Mandy Patinkinplaying Che, and Bob Gunton as Peron. In addition to LuPone, there were a number of other actresses
who alternated playing the title role, including Terri Klausner, Nancy Opel, Pamela Blake, Derin Altay, Loni Ackerman, and
Florence Lacey. The spectacular Broadway production won a number of Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score,
Best Book of a Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Patti LuPone, Best Performance by a Featured
Actor in a Musical for Mandy Patinkin, and Best Direction of a Musical for Harold Prince. The Broadway production also won
several Drama Desk Awards, including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Lyrics, Outstanding Actress in a Musical, and Outstanding
Director of a Musical.
Evita has since toured all over the world, and was even translated into a Spanish-only production
in Madrid, Spain, directed by Jaime Azpilicueta. It also spawned a film adaptation in 1996, starring Madonna and Antonio Banderas.
The successful film ended up winning an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and also was nominated for Best Art Direction,
Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound.
