FC Dallas Major League Soccer
FC Dallas plays
in the MLS, or Major League Soccer, which is the premiere soccer league in the United States and Canada and is also a member
of CONCACAF. Nineteen teams in the league compete during the regular season which begins each March hoping to earn a spot
in the postseason. Each team plays thirty four regular season games with the regular season champion being awarded the Supporters'
Shield. The top ten teams advance to the playoffs with the last two teams playing in the MLS Cup in December. The first season
of the MLS was in 1996 with ten charter members of which the Columbus Crew was one. Plans for establishing the league began
as far back as 1988 when U.S. Soccer made an agreement with FIFA to have plans to get a Division I professional soccer league
in place in order to be allowed to host the 1994 World Cup. The league is granted a spot for three American teams in the CONCACAF
Champions League while another team has the chance to qualify via the U.S. Open Cup. Year after year MLS gains more fans and
it stands as one of the five major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada.
