The road to the theater all started when New Yorker, Stephen Hendel stumbled across a CD of the Nigerian's unique brand
of iconoclast, rabble-rousing music. Hendel was determined to create a theatre piece that expressed the timeless and universal
message that Fela Kuti was trying to get across with his fiery lyrics and passion for social justice. Hendel joined forces
with Tony Award-winning choreographer, Bill T. Jones and writer Jim Lewis in 2004, and the three began creating the stage
production that would someday wow audiences and critics alike. Because Kuti's life was so full of good content for a script
it was hard to decide what to include in the stage production. But, evnetually the three collaborators decided to focus specifically
on Fela's life during the highly-charged 1970s. The show portrays the determined musician as he pays the price for his opinions.
