Fela! first came to life in 2000 when New Yorker Stephen Hendel, came across a CD of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Hendel was so
taken with the music and Fela's sharp sense of social justice that he was determined to create a theater piece representative
of the timeless and universal message embodied in how Fela dedicated his gift - his voice - to the alienated. In 2004, Hendel
collaborated with Tony Award-winning choreographer, Bill T. Jones and writer Jim Lewis. The set out to develop an ode to
dedication and truth by focusing on one short, highly charged time period during the late 1970s. And if you can't make it

Fela had utilized his big-band music as a vehicle to create harsh, satirical diatribes opposing the excesses of successive
military regimes in his native Nigeria. Fela made a point of blatently attacking any form of oppression, injustice or corruption
using persuasive rants that specifically named the culprits. And he paid a steep price for his courage, with 200 arrests and
numerous beatings. Fela passed away in 1997. One million people went to his funeral. His legacy was a testament of remarkable
courage, together with almost 50 albums of music. His message of transparency, truthful government and justice for all is
still significant today as when it was when first released four decades ago.

to reach the stage where they were ready to begin mounting the piece at New York's 37 Arts. They spent three months at 37
Arts perfecting it before they were ready to unveil Fela! The Musical. The show was an instant success, drawing celebrities
