About Monterey and First City Festival
Did you know that Monterey was California's first capital? Well, according
to the First City Festival it is. The city was the first in the state to have theatre, printing press and newspaper, publicly
funded school and library. In addition to this history, Monterey has been a stomping ground for rich artistic culture dating
back to the late 19th century with both acclaimed painters and writers either living in or finding inspiration from the city
of Monterey. These creatives include John Steinbeck, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry Miller and Xavier Martinez. What is more
is its astounding musical history with the renowned Monterey Pop Festival in the late 1960s that hosted Jimi Hendrix, The
Who, Ravi Shankar and Janis Joplin. The First City Festival is a reminder of all things that first that took place in Monterey,
like the Monterey Pop Festival being the catalyst for the "Summer of Love."

First City Festival Lineup: Beck and The National Headliners
What is most impressive about
First City Festival is its lineup. This year, festival goers will have the opportunity to see the following on Saturday: Beck,
Phantogram, Best Coast, Cocorosie, Blind Pilot, Tokyo Police Club, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Midlake, How To Dress Well, Tanlines,
Miniature Tigers, Speedy Oritz, The Stepkids, Mimicking Birds and Mr. Little Jeans. On Sunday the lineup includes: The National,
The Naked and Famous, Dawes, Cults, Future Islands, Lake Street Dive, Geographer, Liars, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., San Fermin,
The Men, Lo-Fang, Connan Mockasin, Midi Matilda, Sleepy Sun and Quilt. The headliners are definitely crowd-pleasers and have
been for many years. The National is a Brooklyn-based indie band that formed in the late 1990s. The band's singer writes and
sings clever lyrics that compliment the talent of the rest of the band. They have often be likened to an interesting mix of
Wilco and Joy Division. As for Beck, he has been around since the early 90s utilizing the sounds provided by funk, soul, hip-hop,
alternative and psychedelic rock and even country. His musicality crosses genres in his sonic experimentation that will co-headline
the First City Festival. First timers, will enjoy the spectrum of musical talent that will be brought to stage in Monterey
at the First City Festival.
First City Festival Experience
The festival experience is not for an audience
member who prefers to sit in the corner of a venue listening to the band from afar or for showing up late to only see the
headliners. It will be tempting this year to show up late full of energy just to see the epic performances of Beck and The
National as they are headlining the First City Festival. Alas, a festival is a commitment to enjoy and play with fellow First
City musical revelers. It is one big party that celebrates the First City's rich history in art, music and love. It is also
a great place to showcase your summer festival fashion.
First City Festival Breakthrough
The First City
Festival's breakthrough happened before the festival even began by simply taking place in Monterey. Monterey's rich history
as a mecca of culture, education and the arts helps make the First City Festival a stand-alone festival that should never
be missed. It is a festival at which one may close their eyes and pretend that they are transported back in time to the Summer
of Love. By its nature, everyone will experience some kind of first during the celebration of this city.
City Festival Trivia
And following in the footsteps of many other festivals trying to incorporate aspects of sustainability
into the festival, it is working with a group to reduce its carbon footprint through a zero waste campaign. It is better known
as The Offset Project, which is a local Monterey nonprofit. Some of First City Festival's partners include, but are not limited
to Bud Light, Global Inheritance, Beat Swap Meet and Unique USA.
