Flight to Mars Background

In 2003, musicians gathered together to give a live show at the Sunset Tavern in Seattle. The performance was part of a surprise encore to be delivered after The Rockfords were done with their set. The Rockfords were there to support the debut CCFA benefit concert. Those musicians at the time didn't have a name for their group but eventually became Flight to Mars - comprised of Mike McCready, Tim DiJulio, Gary Westlake, Mike Musburger and Paul Passereli.

The year 2003 laid the groundwork for Flight to Mars' plight. Annually, the band gives a benefit concert hosted at the Showbox Theater in Seattle to boost awareness and raise funds for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America's Camp Oasis program and Advocacy For Patients With Chronic Illness.

For McCready the fundraiser is personal. In 2002, he brought his own illness to the public light, revealing his 20-year battle with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease. "As a patient living with Crohn's and colitis, the CCFA has played a huge part in helping me get the support and information that I need. I'm grateful that my band mates and friends can support and join me for a night of music and fun that will help us find a cure for these debilitating diseases," McCready said.

Besides supporting a worthy cause, fans are also treated to music reminiscent of the band, UFO. UFO was a band that was established in 1969, born to play heavy metal and hard rock. VH1 ranked UFO No. 84 on its "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" list. UFO has been credited with inspiring Dave Mustaine of Megadeth, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, Frank Hannon of Tesla, Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, and of course, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam.

Flight to Mars Trivia

Flight to Mars is not Mike McCready's only side project. He also was a member of Mad Season, The Rockfords and Temple of the Dog.
