Flying Lotus Background
Flying Lotus's music roots run deep. The great-nephew
of Alice Coltrane (jazz pianist), cousin of Ravi Coltrane (saxophonist) and grandson of Marilyn McLeod (composer) has established
a reputation for himself just as impressive as his relatives. But it was a groovebox and a R.A.W. mixtape that piqued his
interest in making beats. Before pursuing music professionally, Flying Lotusstudied filmmaking. Eventually, hemined what he
learned at film school to his his music, learning to develop albums that unfolded a story. Realizing that his music could
go somewhere, Flying Lotustook a chance when he submitted some songs in response to an ad. They liked what they saw, andFlying
Lotuswas charged with crafting beats for Adult Swim on Cartoon Network prior to putting out his own album, 1983. The effort
has been likened to innovators such as Ammoncontact, J Dilla and Madlib. He followed his debut album with the EP, Reset, before
issuing his sophomore album, Los Angeles, that arrived in 2008. He released a string of EPs comprised of remixes throughout
2009. And in 2010, Cosmogramma dropped. Another full-length effort, Until the Quiet Comes, came out in 2012, trailed by You're
Dead! His latest album features collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Herbie Hancock and Kendrick Lamar. Flying Lotus has additionally
