FM99 Lunatic Luau Background

The Lunatic Luau debuted back in the fall of 1997 at the GTE Virginia Beach Amphitheater. Back then there were nine bands for the unbelievable price of nine bucks, with nearly 20,000 FM99 listeners in attendance! The show's headliners included the best of the '90s: Faith No More along with The Nixons, Seven Mary Three, Our Lady Peace, The Hunger, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Corrosion of Conformity and Drain STH.

The following year Lunatic Luau 2 was hosted at the GTE Virginia Amphitheater as well, headlined by Tommy & the Rumblers, FM99's own band. Other bands in the lineup for the sophomore event included: Sevendust, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Brother Crane, Stabbing Westward, Finger Eleven, Big Wreck, Second Coming and The Mayfield Four.

The event kept its momentum going with a sell-out show of 20,000 lunatics making it to the Lunatic Luau 3 held September 11, 1999, also at the GTE Virginia Beach Amphitheater. The headliner of the third event was Kid Rock. Joining him were Powerman 5000, Staind, Sevendust, Orange 9MM, Soulmotor, Skunk Anansie and Soulmotor. It was also the first time at the Luau where a second stage had been added to accommodate local talents like Car 44, Full Devil Jacket, Deist Requiem, Cock Diesel, Mindset and Sea of Souls.

On September 8, 2000, the GTE Virginia Beach Amphitheater welcomed Lunatic Luau 4. The show was opened by Sea of Souls. Other music acts included Papa Roach, Taproot, Union Underground, Apartment 26 and more.

In 2001, just days after the 9/11 attacks, Lunatic Luau 5 was renamed "Concert For America," and transformed into a benefit for 9/11 victims. Just before the opening headliner took the stage, a local color guard presented the flag. 3 Doors Down was on the bill that year along with Epoxy, Rock Iron Puppets, Bailout, Gate 19, Sea of Souls, Nickelback, Clutch and more.

Showstopper P.O.D. recorded a live show at the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater, marking the Lunatic Luau 6 occasion held in 2002. Drowning Pool also took the main stage. It was one of their final shows that included frontman Dave Williams, who passed away unexpectedly just a few weeks later. Chevelle, Soil, Hatebreed, Adema, Flaw, 3rd Strike and more also played this sixth event.

The second sell-out in Luau history occurred at Lunatic Luau 7 in the late summer of 2003. Headliner Korn was joined by Sevendust (their third Luau appearance), along with Ra, Shinedown, Chevelle, Presence, Memento, Motograter and more.

The year 2004 brought another sell-out show at the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater. Lunatic Luau 8 featured Slipknot, Hatebreed, Drowning Pool, Crossfade, Pillar, Breaking Benjamin, Earshot, God Forbid, Future Leaders Of The World, Revery and more. Chrystall Elliott-Smith, FM99's billing manager, also belted out a few songs for the audience.

Lunatic Luau 9 was headlined by Rob Zombie, featuring Chevelle, Mudvayne, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, Theory of a Deadman, As I Lay Dying, Soilwork, Ra, Nemesis and more.

The 10th Anniversary of the Lunatic Luau was celebrated with appearances by Seven Mary Three, Puddle of Mudd, Saliva, Blackstone Cherry, Buckcherry, Travis Meeks, Suffocation, Nonpoint and more.

Lunatic Luau 11 took place on September 15, 2007, featuring Tesla, Buckcherry, Papa Roach, All That Remains, and more.

Lunatic Luau 12 was cancelled because of Hurricane Hanna. And, there were no Lunatic Luaus held in 2009, 2010 or 2011.

Luckily for fans, Lunatic Luau 12 - The Resurrection came to Farm Bureau Live at Virginia Beach on May 4, 2012. The resurrection was marked by appearances from: Shinedown, Halestorm, Art of Dying, Revery, Five Finger Death Punch, Slash, P.O.D. and more.

Last year, Lunatic Luau 13 took place at Farm Bureau Live, which included Seether, Papa Roach, Three Days Grace, Sevendust, Volbeat, Buckcherry and more.
