The five members of Foals all dabbled in different bands before getting together in Oxford, England. The
band was started by longtime friends Yannis Phillippakis (guitar) and Jack Bevans (drums), who recruited the remaining band
members Andrew Mears (lead vocals), Jimmy Smith (guitar), and Walter Gervers (bassist). The group decided on the name Foals,
a play on Phillippakis' first name, which means "foals" in Greek. Mears left shortly after the band's creation in order to
focus on his other group, Youthmovies, which left the band without a lead singer. Phillippakis took over the role, and his
smooth and clear voice became vital to the band's sound. Foals also took in Edwin Congreave, a fellow Oxford student who met
Phillippakis while both working at the same bar. Congreave soon joined the group on the keyboards, giving Foals a more pop-punk
and dance-music sound.
The band worked on fine-tuning their poppy post-punk sound by playing at local house parties
and spreading their mixed tapes throughout the neighborhood to gain a following. In 2007, the group caught a big break and
signed to Transgressive Records, and started becoming quite popular on the UK music scene. They headed across the pond to
New York City to record their debut album. Although the sessions went well, they didn't love the final outcome after professional
editing and mixing, so they decided to remix their songs themselves and find their own way to release the album. This move
proved to be a great idea, as it let the band have more creative control over their music. If there is anything that Foals
does best, it's that they infuse their own sound and creativity into their songs.

lead singer, Phillippakis, didn't actually grow up in England like the rest of the band members. He spent the first seven
years of his life on a small Grecian island, which is one of the reasons why he wanted to incorporate the Greek etymology
of his first name into the band's name.
