Foster the People Background
This Los Angeles based
band is often called the brainchild of Mark Foster, a musician who moved from Cleveland to LA when he was 18 in order to pursue
his career in music. For several years, Foster struggled in Los Angeles, dealing with writer's block and unsuccessful attempts
to break into the music industry. In 2008, he scored a relatively good gig writing jingles for an advertising company, which
helped him support his passion of writing and creating great tunes.
Eventually, Mark Foster realized that if he were
to succeed in the music industry, he needed a band. So he recruited drummer Mark Pontius and bassist Cubbie Funk, and they
immediately got to work writing and recording their own music. Shortly after the trio formed Foster the People, they released
"Pumped Up Kicks", which went viral almost immediately after they uploaded it online. This song earned Foster the People incredible
praise and attention, and before they knew it, managers and record labels were knocking at their door in hopes of signing
this hot new indie pop outfit.
After signing a record deal, Foster the People continued to work on their music and tour
around the world, garnering new fans every day. Even though Mark Foster worked toward breaking into music for most of his
life, once he secured his band everything seemed to fall into place virtually overnight. Now, Foster the People is one of
the most recognizable indie pop groups in the world, and they have had numerous charting hits and have sold out huge music
venues all over the world. Foster the People not only has a wildly devoted fan base, but now they also have two Grammy Awards
