History of Freestyle
is defined as being a style of electronic dance music or dance-pop music that surfaced in the U.S. around the mid-'80s. The
peak of its popularity came in the late '80s and early '90s, but it continues to be produced today and enjoys some degree
of commercial success. Coveted performers within the freestyle genre include: Timmy T, George Lamond, TKA, Company B, Expose,
The Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, Sa-Fire, Information Society, Sweet Sensation, Shannon, Trilogy, Johnny O, Lisette
Melendez, Rockell, Judy Torres, among others.
Shannon's "Let the Music Play" is frequently billed as the genre's first
major hit and still saturates the airwaves today. Its producers Chris Barbosa and Mark Liggett transformed the electro funk
sound with additives of syncopated drum-machine sound and Latin-American rhythms. The new sound revived the hip-hop, soul
and funk scenes in the Big Apple. While many clubs were forced to close their doors, Manhattan clubs that touted freestyle
music began to boom. Records like "One More Shot" by C Bank, "Play At Your Own Risk" by Planet Patrol and more became smash
hits. Producers from around the planet started to mimic the sound in productions that were more conducive to radio. Records
like "I Remember What You Like" by Jenny Burton, "It Works For Me" by Pam Russo, "Running" by Information Society" and "Give
Me Tonight" by Shannon underwent serious New York radio airplay. Freestyle continues to have strong foothold in New York.
Radio station WKTU launched Freestyle Free for ALL live concerts in 1996. In March 2013, a freestyle concert was hosted at
Radio City Music Hall. Originally orchestrated as a one-night event, a second night was added shortly after the first one
sold out. The 2013 event featured Judy Torres, Cover Girls, Lisa Lisa, Shannon, TKA, Noel and more.
