Fresno State Bulldogs Schedule

The Fresno State Bulldogs are the reigning champions of the Mountain West Conference, but 2014 began with a clean slate and anyone can win it all this year. Though they may have lost in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl to the USC Trojans last December, the Bulldogs are looking to go back to back in the Mountain West this season. Their quest to dominate their MWC foes once again is in full swing and their schedule if rife with tough matchups that are going to be battle for the Bulldogs. After ripping off wins in their first 10 games last season, Fresno State knows that they have a bullseye on their back this season, and are taking the season one game at a time. This will be a season of change for the Bulldogs, who said goodbye to their star quarterback, Derek Carr, who finished his Senior season at Fresno State by leading the nation in passing yardage, with over 400 yards per game. With Carr playing for the Oakland Raiders on Sundays, new quarterback Brian Burrell has some mighty large shoes to fill. Though the season has not started off as the Bulldogs may have expected, there are still many games left on the schedule to right the ship.

Though it may be too soon to say a game is a "must win", the October 3 clash with the San Diego State Aztecs might fit in that category for the Bulldogs. The game will take place at Bulldog Stadium, and the spirited fans will be ready to help their team any way they can. San Diego State has been impressive thus far, with a stingy defense that is allowing only 19 points per game. Aztecs quarterback Quinn Kaehler is playing well and the Bulldogs will need to force some turnovers to keep the ball out of his hands in this highly anticipated matchup of Mountain West Conference foes.

Late in the season, the Bulldogs will welcome their oldest rival, the San Jose State Spartans, to Bulldog Stadium in a game that could have major conference standing ramifications. Like the Bulldogs, the Spartans do a lot of things well, and Senior quarterback Blake Jurichcan pass the ball up and down the field and score lots of points. The Spartans defense is having a tough time keeping opponents out of the end zone, allowing almost 35 points per game so far this season. The November 8 battle could be a high scoring affair and the Bulldogs hope that home field advantage could help tip the scales in their favor. The Mountain West Conference looks to be tough again this year and the Bulldogs will have to win games like this if they want to get back to the top of the standings in the Mountain West.

The Conference

Like every other college football conference in the country, the Mountain West has made some major roster changes over the last few years and the current lineup of teams are all powerful. The new alignment reunites old rivals from former conferences and the Mountain West has never been stronger than it is is 2014. The 2013 champions were the Fresno State Bulldogs, who rode the golden arm of quarterback Derek Carr all the way to the Las Vegas Bowl. Though they have stumbled out of the gate with a revamped offense now that Carr plays in the NFL on Sundays, they are always a threat to break out a string of wins as they did in 2013, when they won 10 in a row. Elsewhere, the conference Boise State Broncos, Nevada Wolfpack and Utah State Aggies are all off to a strong start, so fans are expecting this year to go down to the wire.

In recent years, the Mountain West Conference has been a breeding ground for NFL talent, as this mid-major conference is proving that there are stars outside of the SEC and Big 10. Players like Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin from Boise State, 6 time Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins also in Tampa Bay, who starred at Fresno State, former Nevada Wolfpack quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who now stars for the mighty San Francisco 49ers, 49ers Pro Bowl special teamer Kassim Osgood from San Diego State and Ryan Matthews, the San Diego Chargers Pro Bowl running back who starred at Fresno State, have all made a huge impact at the next level. In the 2014 NFL Draft, the Mountain West Conference tied their record with 16 total players from the conference heading into the NFL in this year's draft class, finishing just 1 behind the Big 12 Conference, who sent 17. The Mountain West isn't looking like a mid-major anymore and the larger conference are no longer looking past the MWC come bowl time.

The Team

With 92 seasons of college football under their belt, the Fresno State Bulldogs have proven that a school in a small town in Central California can compete with the big boys on the biggest of stages. Since 1921, the Bulldogs have been uniting the community with their exciting play that has seen some incredible players donning the cardinal red and blue over the years. The Bulldogs have 26 conference titles in their 92 year history and with one of those coming in 2013, the Fresno State Bulldogs are one of the most powerful teams on the West Coast. Many Bulldog alumni are currently making it big in the National Football League, with names like Logan Mankins, Derek Carr and Ryan Mathews currently representing the team well. Past NFL players like David Carr, Malcolm Floyd, Billy Volek, Lorenzo Neal, Bernard Berrian and Trent Dilfer have also donned the Bulldogs jersey in college. The Fresno State Bulldogs are always in the thick of the Mountain West Conference championship picture and are known for their high scoring offenses, thanks to a legion of great quarterbacks who have led the team.
