2014 Frozen Apple
Since its debut in 2012, the Frozen Apple has become one of the most popular events in college
hockey each season, mainly because it's the type of game that pits two very strong programs against one another for a unique
display of prominent NCAA hockey. Two of the NCAA's premiere teams take the national spotlight early in the season with the
opportunity to play at New York's legendary venue, Madison Square Garden, a place known as one of the most famous sports palaces
in the world. Held on Saturday, Nov. 29 at MSG, the Frozen Apple brings together the Big Red of Cornell to take on the Penn
State Nittany Lions, with Penn State returning to the fold as a D-1 NCAA hockey team.
The atmosphere at Madison Square
Garden is always great, but it is even better when you have two historic college hockey programs packing the building with
their fans and playing in a venue typically reserved for professional sports. With proud traditions between both programs
and some major talent down on the ice, it won't be hard to see that the Frozen Apple is sure to be absolutely hopping with
passion and enthusiasm once again this time around. When the game is still up in the air and two great teams are both trying
to slip one into the back of the net to seal the deal, you'll definitely be glad that you're not anywhere else.
This year's Frozen Apple features the Cornell Big Red facing off against the Penn State Nittany Lions, creating
an old-school rivalry matchup that hasn't been played on the ice for more than 40 years. Cornell boasts one of the most proud
traditions in all of college hockey, with their crowning moment being the 1970 Big Red team that went 29-0 en route to a National
Championship. That team is also known as being the only NCAA men's hockey team to have ever finished a season undefeated.
With many different championships and some of the top players in college hockey from one year to the next, it simply doesn't
get any better than being a Cornell hockey supporter.
Penn State has a long hockey history that has seen the team compete
at both the NCAA Division I level as well as at the club level. The team played a few games in 1909-1910 but was not officially
recognized by the school until 1938. The modern era of Nittany Lions hockey dates back to 1971, when the school competed at
the club level. These days, the Nittany Lions are part of the Big Ten Conference, which formed a hockey conference before
the 2013-2014 season by combining Big Ten schools that were competing in the CCHA and the WCHA for hockey. Put these two talented
squads on the ice and absolutely anything can happen, making for an intense hockey battle that you know you won't want to
miss out on.
