Future Islands Background
Islands took shape while the members studied at East Carolina University's art program together. Frontman Samuel T. Herring
was joined by original members of the group, J. Gerrit Welmers, William Cashion, Adam Beeby and Kymia Nawabi. The bandmates
strengthened their brand name around campus, playing as Art Lord & the Self-Portraits. They went their separate ways in
2006, but Cashion, Herring and Welmers forged ahead, choosing the name of Future Islands. They also recruited Erick Murillo
(bassist) along the way. They put out a handful of cassettes, splits and CD-Rs prior to Murillo's exit. He did, however, continue
to collaborate with the band for a couple of EPs and full-length efforts. The band dropped a few tracks in 2012 but remained
low-key until 2013. It was then that they revealed they had inked a deal with 4AD. Their debut album under the label, Singles
(2014), turned out to be an ideal representation of the synth pop genre. The band played one of the album's gems, "Seasons
(Waiting on You)," live on Late Night with David Letterman. Letterman was actually left speechless and mesmerized by the tune.
