The first Futures at Fenway was in 2006, and pitted Lowell and Oneonta, and Pawtucket and Rochester. Regular season minor league baseball hadn't been played at Fenway Park since 1977. Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino is credited with the idea of Futures at Fenway. His intention was to give New England baseball fans a chance to attend Fenway and see future Boston Red Sox players, without the difficulty of securing ever-popular ' Sox tickets. The event was such a success that they decided to bring it back for 2007.
