Galen Center History

University of Southern California's Gale Center is the perfect spot to take that sports nut in you when you want to catch an adrenaline-fueled game. The Galen Center is the home of the USC Trojans basketball team, and as one of the most popular NCAA teams, the Center sees a lot of fans pass through its doors each year. The Galen Center is named after Louis Galen, a banker and a passionate USC Trojans fan who wanted to see the team have their own place to play. He and his wife donated an initial $10 million to the effort to build a new venue in 2002. The total quickly jumped to around $50 million—a pretty penny for a lovely sports venue that sees a lot of use.

College sports are an institution in American society and have been a big part of the country's culture for a very long time. College basketball dates all the way back to late 1800s, and things really took off for collegiate sports in general with the formation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 1910. The NCAA gradually began to take over the governance of college sports and now essentially runs all collegiate athletics. Any college basketball game you see at the Galen Center is sanctioned by the NCAA.
