George Clinton Background

George Clinton was born on July 22, 1941, in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Clinton spent a big part of his life in New Jersey, where he ran a barber shop.

Clinton initiated his music career in the 1950s, when he established a doo-wop group he dubbed The Parliaments. When the 1960s arrived, Clinton was hired as a staff songwriter for Motown. Clinton headed for Motor City while his group remained in New Jersey, but they continued collaborating long distance.

The Parliaments scored a deal with Revilot Records and churned out their debut hit in 1967, which was (I Just Wanna) Testify. The single nestled into the No. 3 spot on the Billboard R&B charts.

Unfortunately, Revilot Records bellied up and the band's name got muddied in litigation. In 1968, they took the name of Funkadelic. Then in 1972, the group was finally able to take back the Parliament moniker. They decided to use both names but under different record labels. Clinton frequently coined himself "the Referee," consistently switching up vocalists and musicians in his groups, which helped preserve a fresh sound.

Inspired by the sounds of progressive bands like MC 5 and the Stooges, Clinton certainly found his calling in funk, which was a little-known genre at the time. He was constantly on the look out for ways to test his musical compositions. Parliament contrived new sounds through funk – a unique spin on soul that featured deep bass groove, psychedelic guitar and fantastic sound effects – while Funkadelic harvested a rock sound.

Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic issued three platinum albums and over 40 R&B hit singles during the '70s era. But when the musical dynamo hit the '80s, Clinton became tangled up in legal troubles stemming from Polygram's acquisition of Casablanca – Parliament's label. The issue arose again in 1982 where Clinton was obligated to rename the groups. This time around, he inked a deal with Capitol as a solo act and as the P. Funk All-Stars.

As the 1980s rolled on, Clinton released several Top 40 singles, including Do Fries Go With That Shake and Nubian Nut. When the 1990s arrived, Clinton's music went through a revival stage. Rappers like the late Tupac Shakur and Snoop Dogg started sampling his work.

Due to Clinton's commercial success with his albums and his legendary live performances, funk became one of the hot genres of the 1970s, and he remains a musical icon to this day.
