George Duke grew up in a working class neighborhood in Marin City, California, where he was exposed to jazz music at an early age. He started taking piano lessons at the age of seven, and by the time he was in high school, he was performing with jazz groups all over town. After college, Duke teamed up with a younger singer named Al Jarreau and created a group that became the house band at San Francisco's Half Note Club. A few years later Duke became the leader of The George Duke Trio and soon began carving a path for himself in the jazz world. He emerged in the late 1970s as a solo artist, and has been creating great music ever since.
