George Strait Background

Hailing from Poteet, Texas, country music singer George Strait grew up on a farm. He attended Southwest Texas State University where he studied agriculture. Before joining the army, Strait married his high school sweetheart, Norma. He started singing in the Army-sponsored band while stationed in Hawaii. The band went by the name of Rambling Country. He founded his own band after moving back to the Lone Star State. The band, Ace in the Hole, garnered a loyal following.

After several unsuccessful attempts to land a recording contract, Strait inked a solo deal with MCA Records in 1981. Strait Country (1981) came out, producing the hit track, Unwound. Over the course of the '80s, Strait continued to pump out a string of No. 1 albums. The albums included: Strait From the Heart (1982), Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind (1984), Something Special (1985), Ocean Front Property (1987) and Beyond the Blue Neon (1989). All of these albums claimed platinum or multi-platinum status. He was billed the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year in 1989 and received the title again in 1990.

In 1992, Strait was cast in the film, Pure Country. He contributed to the film's soundtrack with Where the Sidewalk Ends, Heartland, I Cross My Heart and The King of Broken Hearts. In 1995, Strait Out of the Box arrived, which was a four-disc set. Sales for the set surpassed five million copies. To date, Strait Out of the Box holds the record of being the top-selling boxed set in country music history. By the time the '90s rolled around, Strait came out with several notable albums including: Blue Clear Sky (1996), Carrying Your Love With Me (1997) and One Step At a Time (1998). In 2000, his album, George Strait, was released with the hit tracks If It's Gonna Rain, She Took the Wind From His Sails and Go On.

Strait's popularity streak continued into the new millennium. His album, The Road Less Traveled (2001) produced Living and Living Well and She'll Leave You with a Smile, which climbed to the No. 1 spot on country charts. The album garnered platinum status as well. In 2003, Honkytonkville generated the hits Cowboys Like Us and Tell Me Something Bad About Tulsa. Also in 2003, Strait was presented with the National Medal of the Arts by George W. Bush.

In 2005, Strait's You'll Be There and She Let Herself Go drove the success of the album, Somewhere Down in Texas. The album also included a duet with Lee Ann Womack, Good News, Bad News, which claimed the CMA Award for Musical Event of the Year in 2005. A year later, It Just Comes Natural produced multiple chart-burners, including Give It Away. The album earned him two CMA Awards and also led to his induction into the CMA's Hall of Fame.

Today, George Strait is still a force to be reckoned with. Troubadour arrived in 2008, which peaked the country album charts right off the bat. Its debut single, I Saw God Today, scored the No. 1 spot on the country charts as well. In the fall of 2008, Strait received two CMA awards, and in 2009 he received a Grammy for Troubadour. The Academy of Country Music also presented him with the Artist of the Decade award.
