This Texas native spent a great deal of his childhood on a large cattle ranch outside of Big Wells, Texas.
It wasn't until high school that George Strait discovered his love for playing music, and he joined a rock and roll garage
band with some of his high school classmates. While he started out his musical endeavors in rock and roll, he soon switched
over to country music, mesmerized by the tunes of Hank Thompson, Merle Haggard, Bob Willis, and George Jones. His musical
preference switched to country not because he listened to the radio often, but because there were always great country music
concerts taking place all around Texas while he was growing up.
In 1971, George Strait married his high school sweetheart
and joined the army. He was stationed in Hawaii when he joined the US Army-sponsored band, which helped Strait polish his
performing skills. After being honorably discharged from the army, George Strait and his family moved back to Texas, where
he enrolled in Southwest Texas State University. During his time at this university, Strait joined the band, Stoney Ridge.
He quickly established himself as the lead and renamed the band Ace in the Hole Band. While the band achieved a dedicated
regional following, they never made it big, and eventually Strait moved on to pursue a solo career.
In 1981, George
Strait released his very first single, "Unwound", which met with instant success, climbing into the top 10 Hot Country Songs
of the year. From that moment on, George Strait was a country music god, performing to sold out crowds around the world. Over
the course of his prolific career, he has sold over 70 million albums, making him one of the best selling artists not just
in country, but also in every genre of music. Strait has received countless awards and accolades, such as an induction into
the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Artist of the Decade award from the Academy of Country Music, several Billboard Awards,
numerous CMA awards, and even a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. There have been few artists as prolific and well known
as George Strait, and as the "King of Country", no one has left such a lasting mark on the country music industry as he has.
