Georgia Dome - The Venue

The Georgia Dome is a domed stadium located in Atlanta, Georgia. It is owned and operated by the State of Georgia as part of the Georgia World Congress Center Authority. It is primarily the home stadium for the NFL's Atlanta Falcons and the NCAA's Georgia State Panthers football team.

As the largest indoor sporting facility in the United States, the Georgia Dome was completed in 1992 at a cost of $214 million. It was also one of the largest state-funded construction projects in its state's history.

Nearly 10,000 tons of reinforced steel was used to build this massive dome, which is more than the steel and iron used for the construction of the Eiffel Tower. The Georgia Dome sits on 9.19 acres of land and is over 270 feet tall with the total floor area rounding out at 102,149.51 square feet.

For its Atlanta Falcons games, the seating capacity is 74,228. It can accommodate up to 80,000 for concerts; 71,000 for basketball when the dome is fully open; and 40,000 for basketball and gymnastics when the dome is sectioned off.

In 2006, the Atlanta Falcons and the Georgia World Congress Center announced a $300 million renovation to the Georgia Dome. It was set to take place in two phases. The first phase, which occurred before the 2007 NFL season, was focused on updating the premium seating areas, including the creation of eight "super-suites" as well as the owners' club.

In 2008, the exterior of the dome was repainted, peeling back its original teal and maroon colors and changed to a red, black and silver color scheme to match the Falcons' team colors. The stadium's original teal seats were replaced with red seats in the 100 and 300 levels with black seats replacing The Verizon Wireless Club Level (200 Level).

The concourses and entrance gates were also renovated before the 2008 football season. The year 2009 saw a completely new sound system and new and wider high-definition video screens that significantly enhance views of replays and provide for innovative graphics and digital presentations.

Team History

The Atlantic Falcons took part in their first NFL draft on November 27, 1965. Their first pick was Tommy Nobis, a linebacker from the University of Texas. The Falcons appointed Norb Hecker as their first head coach. Hecker was an assistant on the staff of famed Green Bay Packers' coach, Vince Lombardi. The new Falcons got off to a slow start in their first season, losing their first nine games. But they regained some ground when they defeated the Giants.

In 1971, the Falcons experienced their first winning season under the guidance of Coach Norm Van Brocklin. Two years later, they finished out the season with a 9-5 record, which was a new team high. In the late '70s and '80s, the Falcons continued to see success, landing in the playoffs three times between 1978 and 1982. In 1980, the Falcons claimed the NFC Western Division title with 12 victories and six Pro Bowl stars.

The History of the Georgia Dome

The Georgia Dome premiered in 1992 as the largest cable-supported domed stadium on the planet!

Nearly 10,000 tons of reinforced steel was used to build the massive Dome - which is more than the steel and iron used for the construction of the Eiffel Tower. The building itself covers 8.9 acres and features 1.6 million square feet on all seven levels.

Georgia Dome Historical Events

Located in downtown Atlanta, the Georgia Dome has played host to Super Bowl XXVIII and XXIV as well as the basketball and gymnastics events for the Olympic Games held in 1996.

While the Georgia Dome is recognized for being the home turf for the Atlanta Falcons, the venue additionally hosts many other events annually, including Supercross, WrestleMania XXVII, Monster Jam, SEC and ACC tournaments, soccer, NCAA regionals and a slew of music concerts from Kenny Chesney to the Rolling Stones.

Their most successful season in franchise history took place in 1998 when the Falcons were crowned the NFC West winners with a 14-2 record. They went on to the playoffs to pick up the NFC championship and headed for Super Bowl XXXIII.

Fan Experience

The date of June 30, 1965, goes down in history as a milestone for Atlanta sports. On that day, the National Football League awarded its 15th franchise to Atlanta. Rankin Smith, a prominent life insurance exec, was awarded the franchise. On the top of Smith's list was to hold a contest for a nickname for the new team. A school teacher came up with the winning name, writing, "The falcon is proud and dignified with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition."

Georgia fans demonstrated their spirit and enthusiasm by buying up season tickets. They even set an NFL record for a new team with sales topping off at 45,000 season tickets!

Today, fans still flock to the Georgia Dome, for the most anticipated rivalries of the season! Make sure you get your Georgia Dome parking lot tickets in advance to join in on the tailgating fun! Head to StubHub today!
