Gilberto Santa Rosa Background
Santa Rosa was born in 1962 in Puerto Rico. El Gran Combo, a pioneering salsa outfit, was instrumental in influencing Santa
Rosa to start singing salsa himself at the age of 10.
In his formative teen years, Santa Rosa went to Escuela Libre
de Musica de San Juan to study the trumpet and sax. Around the same time, he additionallymade his formal singing premiere
during a TV special celebrating Three Kings Day. He then established his first musical group, La Evolucion 65, which would
later evolve into La Potencia orchestra.
After the group disbanded, Santa Rosa went on to become part of groups like
Manolito Rodriguez's Fantasia Boricua Orchestra, Don Perignon, Puerto Rico All Stars and La Primerisima. But the move that
catapulted his career was with the Willie Rosario Orchestra. He garnered success with acclaimed hits like Botaron la pelota
When the '80s rolled around, Santa Rose fronted his own orchestra but also tossed around the idea of spreading
his wings on his own. His tenure as a bandleader generated the albums, Keeping Cool, De Amor y Salsa, Salsa en Movimiento
and Good Vibrations.
His imprint on the music scene became even more pronounced when inked a deal with Sony BMG record
label. Santa Rosa said, "I have to admit that when I started at Sony my international career took off. We have a friendly
and stable relationship."
Santa Rosa's unrivaled gift to improvise ("sonear") put him on the map globally, cultivating
hordes of fans outside his native country of Puerto Rico, including the U.S., Central and South America as well as Japan,
where he was greeted warmly when he toured there in the '90s.

salsa performers to bring the genre to the Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferre - the island's premiere concert hall.
