Gillian Welch Background
Gillian Welch was raised by her adoptive parents,
Ken and Mitzie Welch, in the Big Apple. Her parents, both in show business, picked up and relocated to the West Coast to pen
music for the beloved Carol Burnett Show. Throughout her childhood, Welch was exposed to the music of such folk phenoms as
the Carter Family, Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie. She sang folk songs along with her schoolmates at the Westland Elementary
School in L.A. After graduating from Santa Monica's Crossroads School, Welch studied at the University of California, Santa
Cruz. It was there she started playing in a psychedelic surf band and a goth band - playing bass and drums, respectively.
It was also in college when Welch experienced a revelation sparked by a bluegrass album played by her roommate at the time.
first song came on and I just stood up and I kind of walked into the other room as if I was in a tractor beam and stood there
in front of the stereo. It was just as powerful as the electric stuff, and it was songs I'd grown up singing. All of a sudden
I'd found my music," Welch said.
Welch earned her degree in photography from UC Santa Cruz. She then went on to study
songwriting at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was there she bumped into her present-day music partner, David Rawlings,
when they both tried out for the sole country band at Berklee. Nashville called to Welch and Rawlings in 1992. Welch said,
"I looked at my record collection and saw that all the music I loved had been made in Nashville - Bill Monroe, Dylan, The
Stanley Brothers, Neil Young - so I moved there. Not ever thinking I was thirty years too late."
After Rawlings and
Gillian discovered their voices meshed well together, they began entertaining as a duo, performing simply as "Gillian Welch."
Eventually, Welch started working with Denise Stiff as her manager. They inked a deal with Almo Sounds. Welch's debut, Revival,
arrived in 1996 to critical acclaim. Allmusic's Mark Deming said, "Welch's debts to artists of the past are obvious and clearly
acknowledged, but there's a maturity, intelligence and keen eye for detail in her songs you wouldn't expect from someone simply
trying to ape the Carter Family."
Gillian Welch continued to churn out albums, like Hell Among the Yearlings (1998),
with her longtime partner. Today, Welch and Rawlings continue to hit the road together, taking their authentic brand of music
to stages everywhere. Audiences never grow tired of their music that ties in elements of gospel, traditional bluegrass, old
time and classic country with rock, punk, R&B and jazz.
