Gipsy Kings Background

The Gipsy Kings were born and raised in the south of France, but their parents instilled the energy and allure of Spanish Gypsy culture in them from a young age. Nicolas and Andre Reyes were born in Arles, France, to famous flamenco artist, Jose Reyes. The two boys soon joined forces with their cousins, Jacques, Maurice, and Tonino Baliardo to create their own musical group. They wanted to bring their fun and rhythmic music to the public, so they began traveling around France and playing wherever they could—wedding, parties, and even street corners. Because of this new lifestyle of constant traveling, the group decided to name themselves the Gipsy Kings.

Although their first two albums went largely unnoticed, the Gipsy Kings continued to perform and create music that garnered them devoted fans. In 1986, everything changed for this band from the small town of Arles. Claude Martinez, a music producer, saw immense potential in the group of cousins, so he took them under his wing and their musical careers took off.

Their first self-titled album, Gipsy Kings, ignited their popularity, particularly in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. In 1989, the album was also released in the United States, and spent a whopping 40 weeks on the charts. And just like that, the Gipsy Kings because an international success, with record sales all over the world and an international fan base that continued to grow.

To this day, you can still hear the Gipsy King's music all around the world, blasting through store speakers, salsa clubs, and even in film and television. This internationally renowned band is coming to a city near you, and you don't want to miss out on seeing this best-selling group perform live!

Biggest Hits

Since the beginning of their illustrious musical career, the Gipsy Kings have sold almost 20 million albums around the world, and continue performing and producing music because music is intrinsic to who they are as people. Their debut album had hit songs like "Djoba djoba" and "Bamboleo", with later hit singles like "Volare", "Baila me", and "Pida me la" becoming widely popular throughout Europe, Africa, and even reaching success in North America. Because this pop flamenco group created a new type of music that gave them their own genre, they attracted the attention of the film and television industry. Their cover versions of songs have appeared on screen in The Big Lebowski, Toy Story 3, and Entourage.

To date, they have 15 gold and platinum records, and a 1989 nomination for best new world music artist by Billboard.

Did you know that the Gipsy Kings still keep their Gypsy roots close to heart?

All of the members of the Gipsy Kings are related in some capacity, all brothers, cousins, or brothers-in-law. For part of the year, they return to Arles, France, and live in an 80-trailer gypsy caravan, which brings them back to their Gypsy roots with which they were raised. When they are not out performing around the world, they return to their family in Arles and live like they did when they were growing up.
