Glen Hansard grew up in Dublin, Ireland, with a love for music and for what he called the Holy Trinity: Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, and Bob Dylan, with Dylan being the most important. Later in his career, the singer had the chance to open for his music icon (Dylan), and continues to perform Van Morrison songs at many of his concerts. Hansard knew at an early age that music was his passion. He dropped out of school at 13 and began busking around his home country to make money and expose people to his music. He formed The Frames in 1990, and the band has been a staple in the Irish music scene for years. They released their first album in 1991, and have continued to create new music into the 2000s. He gained national attention when he played guitar player Outspan Foster in the 1991 Alan Parker film The Commitments. But Hansard quickly returned to his musical roots, and began collaborating with Czech singer market Irglova and two other band members to create his first album outside of The Frames. He earned national acclaim for his work with Irglova, and was even honored with an Academy Award for a song he and Irglova wrote for an Irish film called Once. Glen Hansard has come into his own in the last decade, performing for prestigious events like the funeral of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, joining Bono, Damien Rice and other musicians for a charity event in Dublin, and performing for winners of an auction to benefit Haitian relief aid. His music has also been featured on major motion pictures like the blockbuster The Hunger Games and an episode of NBC's TV series Parenthood, where he also played a role in the show.
