Great Lake Swimmers Background

Often likened to musicians like Neil Young, Red House Painters, Iron & Wine and Nick Drake, Great Lake Swimmers' frontman/songsmith, Tony Dekker, credits Hank Williams and Gram Parsons as inspirations. Along with Dekker, who also plays acoustic guitar and harmonica, the band is currently comprised of Bret Higgins (upright bass); Joshua Van Tassel (drums); and Miranda Mulholland (violin, backing vocals). Their first effort, Great Lake Swimmers, arrived in 2003, followed by Bodies and Minds in 2005. Both albums were issued on the weewerk independent label prior to inking a deal with Nettwerk in 2007. Ongiara came in 2007, serving as their third full-length album. Lost Channels, the band's fourth album, made a splash on the music scene, garnering both a Juno Award nod and was shortlisted for the critically acclaimed 2009 Polaris Music Prize, joining the ranks of other outfits like Metric and Fucked Up. The follow-up to Lost Channels, New Wild Everywhere(2012)builds on the themes that its predecessor started. The album expounds on the ubiquitous topics of escape, love and mortality. Fans can expect more albums to come that meet Great Lake Swimmers' same high standards. Currently, the band has a sixth studio album in the works.

Great Lake Swimmers Trivia

Did you know that Great Lake Swimmers is widely known for their unique choices for recording environments? Studio, schmudio. That's why producer Andy Magoffin was happy to hear New Wild Everywhere would be cut in an actual recording studio. Magoffin said, "I finally got what I always wanted: Tony Dekker asked me to help his band make a record in a real studio. No extension cords, boat rides, generators, buzzing flies, squirrel noise, missing connectors, furnace cycles, motorcycles, faulty rentals, bad weather or bad headphone mixes to mess things up. We chose to work in Toronto at Revolution Recording, a brand new studio with brand new everything, except for the old stuff which is also brand new. We had access to a great many microphones, instruments, processors and people we would not normally have had the privilege of working with." However, the band had to squeeze in at least one authentic field trip into their recording sessions. "The Great Exhale" was cut in a deserted subway station in Toronto. "We set up a studio from scratch on the moist florescent-lit oil-coated subway platform of the unused Lower Bay Station. It was bleak. I could not tell if the recording was any good, because our playback system was nearly useless in the echoing, cavernous tunnel. When we finally listened to the results, we were amazed to hear how beautifully the song fit with the other album tracks," Magoffin said of "The Great Exhale" recording session. "Somehow, Great Lake Swimmers sound just like they should no matter what tools they're using or how far they get from civilization."
