In the past, Grupo Fantasma has played major venues and festivals, including the Kennedy Center, Austin City Limits, Calgary Folk Music Festival, SXSW, South Padre International Music Festival, Bonnaroo, North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, WOMEX, Tempo Latino (France), as well as two tours that brought them to Iraq and Kuwait to play for U.S. troops.

Grupo Fantasma Background

The Latin-funk collective, Grupo Fantasma, was established in 2000, in Austin, Texas. Members of The Blue Noise Band and The Blimp merged together and played to a sold-out crowd at the former Empanada Parlour in Austin. The band draws their inspiration from formats and genres like old-school funk, reggae, salsa, cumbia and more.

Their high-spirited live shows have carved out a loyal fan base, with their reputation built entirely upon word of mouth.

The band has played the Austin City Limits Music Festival twice and was included on the Austin City Limits PBS TV show. They have taken the stage of festivals like the Calgary Folk Music Festival and the Montreal Jazz Festival and have headlined countless SXSW shows throughout their tenure. In 2007, they performed at the first South Padre International Music Festival.

Grupo Fantasma's horn section has been additionally included on global releases and has recently played with Spoon.

Their album, Sonidos Gold, garnered a Grammy nod for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album at the 51st Grammy Awards. And Grupo Fantasma claimed a Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards.


Grupo Fantasma Hit Albums

Grupo Fantasma has sold over 20,000 albums. Their albums include: Grupo Fantasma (2002); Movimiento Popular (2004); Comes Alive (2006); Sonidos Gold (2008); and El Existential (2010). The band has also been featured on numerous albums like Mascaras by Sergent Garcia (2004); Uno, Dos, Banderas by Control Machete (2004 Universal); Eklektikos Live (2005); El Nino y El Sol by Ocote Soul Sounds and Adrian Quesada (2005, ESL Music); Homenaje by Brownout (2007); and Aguilas and Cobras by Brownout (2009).

Some of the band's tunes include: Barretta, Chocolate and Perso Fra/Mesquites, which was featured on an episode of the popular Showtime series, Weeds.
