Guy Background

The band, Guy, took shape in Harlem, New York, in 1987, by R&B singers/songwriters Aaron Hall, Timmy Gatling and Teddy Riley. Gatling and Riley grew up together in Harlem and previously worked together in the Kids At Work band. Hall was asked to come aboard what would eventually become Guy. Along with penning songs for their own group, Hall and Riley worked on other side projects, including "Just Got Paid" by Johnny Kemp and "My Prerogative" by Bobby Brown.

Under the tutelage of Gene Griffin, Guy inked a deal with Uptown Records and issued their premiere album, Guy, in June 1988. Gatling split from the band and was replaced by Hall's younger brother, Damion. Five tracks were issued off the album - none of which made a dent on the US Hot 100 chart. But, four of the tracks became huge R&B hits. The singles included "Groove Me," "Round And 'Round," "Spend the Night" and "Teddy's Jam," and they catapulted the album to claim double platinum status. "Piece of My Love" additionally garnered some airplay on R&B radio stations. The album impressively scored the No. 27 spot on the US Top 200 Album Chart without peddling a major pop hit and snagged the No. 1 spot on the R&B Album Chart.

Following the album's success, Guy contributed the tune, "My Fantasy" to the Do The Right Thing soundtrack (1989). Riley and Griffin additionally worked with Boy George. They produced his R&B tune, "Don't Take My Mind On A Trip." In the fall of 1990, Guy issued its sophomore album, The Future. The album's five singles made their way to the R&B charts. The songs included: "Let's Chill," "Wanna Get Wit U," "D-O-G Me Out," "Do Me Right" and "Let's Stay Together." After the album's run, the group broke away from Riley. One of their last recordings was their rendition of "Land of a Thousand Dances" (Wilson Pickett). It was included in FernGully: The Last Rainforest. In the 1990s, Riley collaborated with other artists like Michael Jackson and Heavy D. He also established Blackstreet. On the other hand, the Hall siblings went after solo careers during the same time period.

At the close of the '90s, the Hall brothers and Riley came back together to work on their first album in nearly a decade. It was called, Guy III. The album highlighted the song, "Dancin,'" which hit the No. 19 spot on the US Hot 100 chart. The group split again not long after but collaborated once in awhile 2005 onward. In 2006, they participated in the New Jack Reunion Tour, joining New Edition, After 7, Tony Toni Tone and Blackstreet.

The Hall boys and Riley reunited at the BET Awards in 2009. They did "I Like" as part of a new jack swing medley. In early 2011, Damion and Aaron played without Teddy in Washington, D.C. at the BET Honors. The Washington Post said, "Guy brought the audience to its feet with new-jack-swing-era hits 'Let's Chill' and 'Groove Me.'" As of 2013, Riley released that he's reunited with Guy and will be working with Guy and Blackstreet.
