Born in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, but raised in the snowy winters of Rapid City, South Dakota, the songstress honed her skills in a world of seclusion in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She drew inspiration and support from her creative parents and willing younger siblings who often participated in Bonar's theatrics and musical shows. Her parents were so supportive in fact that they helped her pay to have her first self-titled album recorded and released before she even graduated from high school. When high school ended, Bonar set out on a journey of self-discovery with her guitar and Farfisa organ to discover what life had in store for her as a singer. She landed in the north woods of Duluth, MN, at an open stage called "Experimental Thursdays," where she played a few originals and a cover of "California Dreamin.' The future singing sensation didn't know it, but one of her idols-Alan Sparhawk of Low was in the audience and upon hearing the beautifully vulnerable voice of Bonar, asked her to open for his band. Soon, she was traveling across the country with the big name band. Sparhawk helped the young singer release her next album. Since then, she's release three full-length albums, several EPs, and started a punk/new-wave side band called Gramma's Boyfriend.
