The first time that Daryl Hall and John Oates met each other was nothing short of fate. In 1967, both
musicians were at a band competition at the Adelphi Ballroom in Philadelphia with their separate bands, Hall with The Temptones
and Oates with The Masters. Suddenly, gunfire rang out in the room, as two rival gangs began to shoot at one another. Afraid
for their lives, all of the band competition participants fled, and Hall and Oates just happened to run into the same elevator
in their attempt to flee from the gunfire.
The two men immediately connected, and upon getting to know each other further,
they found out that they both attended Temple University. After meeting on that fateful and frightening night, Hall and Oates
became close friends and eventually roommates. The mailbox at one of their apartments sported the name-tag "Hall & Oates"
which would eventually become the duo's band name. They didn't start playing music together right away, however, even though
they both shared a passion for singing and songwriting. After two years of friendship, they officially formed a musical duo.
Three years later, Atlantic Records heard their catchy tunes and signed them right away.
Because Hall & Oates had
a bit of trouble defining their signature sound right away, their first several albums were met with limited success. It wasn't
until the duo switched from Atlantic Records to RCA Records that they had their first great success with their album Daryl
Hall & John Oates. One of the songs on the album, "Sara Smile" broke onto the Top 10 chart, eventually peaking at number
four. Their second single, "Rich Girl", became the duo's first number one hit. After that, Hall & Oates exploded onto
the music scene, finally comfortable with their sweet pop rock sound that was slightly bluesy. Fans went wild for the duo's
happy and catchy songs and their smooth vocal harmonies, and Hall & Oates continued to crank out commercial hits that
were also critically acclaimed.
Don't miss out on seeing this beloved duo perform their sweet harmonies live and grab

know that Saturday Night Live used to poke fun at the duo?
The Saturday night sketch show used to make fun of how Oates
was typically in the background while Daryl Hall stole the spotlight. This isn't true, however, since the credits on many
of the duo's songs reveal that John was very involved in writing their smash hits.
