Hank Williams Jr. Background

Hank Williams Jr. was surrounded by country music since the moment he was born, as his father was the iconic country superstar, Hank Williams. However, Hank Jr. never truly got to know his father, as Hank Sr. tragically died when his son was just three years old. This didn't stop country music from being a big part of his childhood, though, as some of country's biggest artists visited the Williams' household regularly and influenced Hank Jr. with their musical styles. Some of these visitors included Johnny Cash, Fats Domino, and Earl Scruggs. With all of the encouragement and musical influence he received throughout his early years, Hank Williams Jr. decided to perform one of his father's songs on stage when he was just eight years old.

Williams also played an integral part in the 1964 film, Your Cheatin' Heart, a musical about the life of his father, whom he provided the vocals for. Throughout the early part of his career, his father remained a huge influence on him, as Williams largely imitated his father's style and even re-recorded many of his father's songs. It wasn't until he moved to Alabama that Hank was able to refocus his creative energy and start to hone his own personal creative vision. His musical style started to evolve into a Southern rock and country blues genre, a noticeable departure from his father's musical style. It was this style that has made Hank Williams Jr. the country superstar that he is today.

Throughout the 1980s, it seemed like Hank Williams Jr. couldn't stop releasing new albums. Throughout this incredibly prolific decade, Hank released some of his biggest hits, such as "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound" and "Born to Boogie". He also was named Entertainer of the Year by both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music for several years in a row in the late '80s. The following decades continued to be huge successes for this country legend, and he has easily remained one of the most important figures in the history of country music. Hank Williams Jr. has collected a massive stack of awards over the years, including Emmy Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards, Grammy Awards, and an induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
