For those who aren't family with the German fairy tale: Hansel and Gretel are the young children of a poor woodcutter. When the land is plagued by a giant famine, the woodcutter's evil second wife takes the children into the woods and leaves them there to fend for themselves, so that she and her husband will have more food to share. In the woods, the children discover a large cottage built of gingerbread and cakes. They begin to eat part of the candy house, only to discover that a wicked witch lives in the cottage, which she built to lure children in and then eat them! The witch captures the children and holds them hostage, while fattening them up for consumption. However, the crafty children manage to fool the blind witch and ultimately trap her in her own oven and burn her to death! The kids then find treasure in the cottage and make off with it. They arrive home to find that their father's evil wife has left him without explanation and the family (Hansel, Gretel and their father) live happily (and richly!) ever after. Buy opera tickets now!
