Betts joined the Allman Brothers Band in the 1960s as a second guitarist. He became known not only as a performer, but as a songwriter as well. “Revival” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” were both penned by him. When frontman Duane Allman was killed in an accident, Betts took on a larger role in the band.
Betts is probably best known for writing the Allman Brothers’ Band’s biggest hit, “Ramblin’ Man.” As the band members pursued their own solo projects, Betts followed suit. He formed Dickey Betts and Great Southern in 1976. Fans have gone on to enjoy his music as well as his work with the Allman Brothers Band.
