Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, home of the Hawaii Warriors, is one of the best places to be as the college basketball season heats up. The Warriors are coming off a decent year that saw them finish fourth in the Big West, just a game behind Long Beach State and they will be looking to improve upon that conference record in an effort to make their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2002. The level of excitement at Stan Sheriff Arena when the Warriors hit the floor is unlike anything else to be found in Honolulu and nothing beats being inside the venue when Hawaii takes on the best teams in the Big West. It will not be easy for the Warriors to make it to the top of the conference standings in the loaded Big West but Hawaii appears to have the talent to pull it off this season.

Once again the Hawaii Warriors will be going up against the top teams in the Big West this season including the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, the UC Irvine Anteaters, and the Long Beach State 49ers. The Warriors will also be looking to avenge a conference tournament quarterfinals loss to Cal State Northridge when the two teams face off for what should be a thrilling match up this season. During their quest to leapfrog Irvine, Santa Barbara, and Long Beach this season the Warriors will need every last bit of home court advantage they can get from all of their biggest fans at Stan Sheriff Center. Tickets to see the Warriors play at home always sell quickly so be sure to get your tickets fro StubHub as soon as possible so you can choose from among the best seats in the house.

Hawaii Warriors Basketball History

Hawaii has been a member of the Big West Conference since 2012 when it left the Western Athletic Conference and has already begun to prove itself as a contender for the conference title. Last season the Warriors finished fourth in the conference during the regular season before being ousted from the conference tournament in the quarterfinals by Cal State Northridge. It has been more than twelve years since the Warriors have made it to the NCAA Tournament and head coach Gib Arnold, son of former coach Frank Arnold, will surely be getting his squad motivated to get back to the Big Dance. In their four trips to the NCAA Tournament the Warriors have yet to win a game. They have, however, won three conference tournaments and one conference regular season title. Big things are in store for the Warriors as they continue to develop new rivalries in their new home and fans will want to be there all season long as Hawaii looks to dominate the Big West competition.

Hawaii Warriors Basketball Conference

The Hawaii Warriors play basketball in the Big West Conference where they annually have games against the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, the UC Irvine Anteaters, the Long Beach State 49ers, the Cal State Northridge Matadors, the Cal Poly Mustangs, the Cal State Fullerton Titans, the UC Riverside Highlanders, and the UC Davis Aggies. The history of the conference dates back to 1969 when it was known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. In 1988 the conference changes its name to the Big West. Basketball has been the most popular sport in this mid-major conference ever since it stopped sponsoring football back in 2000. Traditionally UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, and UC Irvine have dominated the conference but teams like Hawaii and Cal State Northridge have been becoming serious contenders for the conference championship. In the Big West winning the conference tournament is key as it is typically a one bid conference for the NCAA Tournament. With such high stakes involved for every team participating in the Big West Tournament, it is annually one of the most exciting in all of college hoops. Last season UC Irvine emerged as the conference regular season champions but it was Cal Poly who won the conference tournament as a a seven seed and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Experience

Attending a top college basketball game is one of the best experiences to be found in sports. Many of the top student athletes in the world take the court in college basketball, when this is combined with some of the most passionate fans in all of sports there is an atmosphere in the arena that cannot be found anywhere else. When you set foot into Stan Sheriff Arena for a Hawaii Warriors home basketball game this will all be clear. As the teams set up for opening jump ball the fans get on their feet and loudly cheer for their alma mater and hometown favorites. The game continues full of end to end action, big time shots, and clutch defensive stops. All of a sudden the clock is winding down in the second half and the two sides are wrapped up in yet another tight contest. Your palms get sweaty with each trip down the floor and each time a player from your favorite team lets loose a shot you hold your breath until the ball tickles the twine. This continues until the final buzzer when the Warriors' side erupts after another big win and their fans exit of the arena in jubilation. The minute you leave Stan Sheriff Arena you will want to begin your next trip back to help cheer on the Warriors.

Trivia

Upon leaving the WAC, Hawaii joined the Big West, however the conference got rid of football in 2000 which posed a problem for the university. Fortunately, Hawaii was able to join the Mountain West Conference as a football only school while participating in the Big West for all other sports. Twelve former Hawaii Warriors have been drafted by an NBA tea, most recently Reggie Cross who was drafted in the second round by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1989. Hall of Fame coach Rick Pitino coached the Warriors for the final six games of the 1976 team and went 2-4.
