The Dayton, Ohio group the Heartless Bastards formed in 2003 with vocalist/guitarist Erika Wennerstrom and bassist Mike Lamping at the helm. Originally a five piece, the group became a trio, along with Kevin Vaughn on drums and signed to Fat Possum Records in '04 after The Black Keys heard them and took a liking to their sound.
