by other genres. That's the way it breathes."

Herbert Jeffrey Hancock took up the piano at the tender age of seven in his native Chicago, Illinois. Hancock
displayed such promise that just a few years later he was playing Mozart with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The virtuoso
continued to pursue music in high school as well but after graduation, he majored in electrical engineering at Grinnell College
to concentrate on what he thought was a more practical career. But Hancock eventually decided to study music composition.
He established his own band and picked up and relocated to the Big Apple to gig with Donald Byrd, trumpeter. Eventually, Hancock
inked a record contract with Blue Note and issued his first album, Takin' Off. Hancock went on to compose "Maiden Voyage"
and "Cantaloupe Island" and gigged with Miles Davis. Hancock worked with Davis for many years as part of Davis' group. The
two established a mutual admiration society, inspiring each other's sound.
Hancock continued to cement his reputation
as an extraordinary songwriter, who transcended genre boundaries. He wasn't afraid to color outside of the lines of jazz and
dabbled in hip-hop and R&B. Evidence of his willingness to try new things was embodied in his works Mwandishi (1970) and
Head Hunters (1973).
